Meet Izzy

Izzy holding the Calathea Warscewiczzi, available at Daisy’s.

How did you start working at Daisy’s?

“My little sister thought it would be cool if I worked here so she asked Barbara and that’s how I got the job.”

What is your favorite part of the job?

“Working with plants all day.”

What does a typical day at Daisy’s look like for you?

“Working in the greenhouse, making everything look pretty, and then taking time to water and kind of reorganize the plants so it looks nice.”

What did you do before working at Daisy’s?

The Calathea Warscewiczzi, available at Daisy’s.

“I used to work at Annie’s Annuals, it’s a nursery, and then I also used to work on a farm before that.”

Why did you choose the Calathea Warscewiczzi as your favorite Daisy’s item?

“It’s a tropical plant and I really like it because their leaves are always patterned really nicely and usually the bottom is purple, which is cool.”

What is your favorite part about Alameda?

“Honestly, I love that it’s such a home-y town. The fact that you can ride your bike anywhere on the island and run errands on your bike, I really like that. And all the Victorians houses, I love the Victorian houses.”

What advice do you have for people looking to go into the retail business and/or nursery business?

“One, you have to love people and two, you have to love plants. For retail if you’re not a people person it’s not for you.”

What did you want to be when you grew up?

“I always wanted to own my own farm and that hasn’t changed.”

What is your favorite place you’ve ever visited and why?

“Probably Madrid, Spain. Why? Because of siesta, and the fact that you can tell that everybody’s living around you and living their lives, going to to work, but it’s so much more relaxed. There’s not the rush or need to get stuff done. Everyone’s just living, and it doesn’t feel like such a city, even though it is.”

What is your favorite song?

“Harvest Moon [by Neil Young].”

What is advice you’d give to your younger self?

“When I was younger I think I did care what other people thought of me, so I wish I would’ve found out sooner that you don’t have to really care what other people think of you.”

Stay tuned for the next few weeks to meet the rest of the Daisy’s team!
